Oliver Gavin, Max Papis and Jorg Bergmeister provisionally finished the 2005 Rolex 24 at Daytona 16th overall and 10th in class. It was an eventful race for the #66 Krohn Racing/TRG Pontiac Riley, mechanical problems delaying them during the night. The team also had to cope with Jorg Bergmeister suffering an illness overnight, leaving Oliver and Max to finish the race.
The team started from 3rd on the grid but lost places during the early running. A combination of driving and well timed pit stops allowed the car to make its way back up the field and Oliver even led the race for a couple of laps at 9 Hours and 20 Minutes in.
It was at the 13.5 Hour mark that the main problems struck with brake and driveshaft difficulties necessitating a complete rear end change. In the next few hours there were several lengthy stops for the team but they kept going to complete 653 laps and finish in 16th overall.
The race was won by the #10 Sun Trust Racing car of Max Angelelli, Wayne Taylor and Emmanuel Collard. They had a tremendous battle with the #20 CITGO Howard Boss Motorsports car of Andy Wallace, Jan Lammers and Tony Stewart but they ultimately finished 3rd after a late gearbox change. The provisional top 5 were:
1 #10 Angelelli/Taylor/Collard - 710 laps
2 # 4 Leitzinger/Forbes-Robinson/Johnson - 699 laps
3 #20 Wallace/Lammers/Stewart - 699 laps
4 #02 Johansson/McMurray/Wagner - 698 laps
5 #77 Gollin/Bobbi/Theys - 697 laps
16 #66 Papis/Bergmeister/Gavin - 653 laps
